Briefing
Island of Izu Oshima is located south of Tokyo metropolitan city, accessible by air or ferry. ANA has daily flights to island of Izu Oshima from Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport), takes only 30 minutes.
The ANA afternoon flight to Hachijo-Jima is stopping at Oshima, so if you take the morning flight when you are flying to Hachijo-Jima, you will be able to have few hours to explore the island before catching the connecting flight.
The Airport and Around
Oshima Airport is located in the north part of the island, between the town of Motomachi and Okada
The farm called BURATTO HOUSE is located just beside the runway, offering fresh vegis and tasty ice cream.
If you walk to the direction of Motomachi for 10 minutes from the airport, you will find a tiny cake shop on your right side.
If you have missed the bus from the airport terminal due to the delay, you can also take a bus from the main street, which is few minutes walk away from the airport. The bus operates extremely less frequently, so it is recommended to check the time before leaving the airport. The timetable leaflet for the bus is usually available in the airport.
Downtown Motomachi
You wouldn't, but it is also possible to walk to the downtown Motomachi from the airport. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the downtown if you walk faster.
A temple called Cho-on-ji is located at the edge of the downtown.
There is a roundabout in front of the ferry port. It is the downtown of Motomachi. Souvenir shops are around, and cabs are waiting for passengers there.
Motomachi Ferry Terminal has the daily ferry service to Tokyo mainland, and regular service to Izu Islands. They also offer free foot-spa (Ashi-Yu) facility.
Just behind the shops in front of the ferry port, there is an old gate in red color in front of Hotel Aka Mon. It is the remain of the house of Tametomo, the samurai. There is also a shrine there.
Walking along the sea to the north, I found a nice park, Naganehama Park. There is a monument of Tametomo in the park.
In front of Naganehama Park, there is a hot spring place called Ai-land Center: Gojinka Onsen.
But wait a minute, if you are looking for a cheaper hot spring, you can try Motomachi Hamanoyu at Naganehama Park. It is the outdoor hot spring, and you will need to bring or hire a bathing suit there.
After the bathing, I went back to the downtown and had a famous Bekko Don for lunch.
There was another monument on the other side of the port.
The bus stop is just in front of the ferry port. The bus towards Okada usually stops closer to the airport.
Back to the Airport
The plane was already landed when I was walking to the terminal.
Because I already checked in for the next flight in Haneda, I just went upstairs for the departure.
